What do I wear to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing such as a t-shirt or compression shirt, tights or board shorts. Most people wear sandals as we do not allow shoes on the mat.
What is a GI and do I need one for my first class?
A Gi (sometimes referred to as Kimono) is the uniform that is typically worn when training traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It consists of 3 pieces: a jacket (or top), pants, and a belt.
No, you don’t need one. We can provide you with a Gi for your first class if you prefer.
Should I arrive early to my first class?
Please try to arrive 10-15 minutes early so that you can meet the staff and instructor, sign a waiver and get you set up if necessary.
What is a typical class like?
The first part of class consists of a warm-up which includes stretching, core work, and movement drills. After the warm-up, the instructor will show the technique of the day. You will be partnered with other students and will drill the technique. The last part of class is the “rolling” or sparring. You DO NOT have to roll your very first day. You decide when you are ready to roll.
